Depression and suicide
Slightly depressed moods to major depressive disorders are among the most common mental health conditions in young people. A large number of 16 to 20-year-old learners in vocational education and training report symptoms of depression. Girls are more likely to be affected than boys. Suicide is one of the most common causes of death among young people (after accidents).
VET trainers can only provide limited assistance to learners by making them aware of potential risks and by providing support. On the other hand, it is up to a doctor (psychologist or psychiatrist) to make a diagnosis and provide therapy. If there are signs of a mental illness, a counselling or specialist centre should be contacted as promptly as possible. The cantonal VET offices are the first point of contact for initial information. They can provide advice and provide contact details of specialised centres.
